Ahead of the December 2nd Local Government Elections in Akwa Ibom State which is just three days away, the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak has said that AKISIEC is ready to conduct Local Government elections that will be generally accepted by the good people of Akwa Ibom State. Elder Ikoiwak made this assertion today while addressing a Press Conference in Uyo.
He announced that the Commission had taken delivery of all sensitive and non-sensitive materials; and while the non-sensitive ones had already been deployed to AKISIEC Area offices in the thirty-one Local Government Areas, the sensitive ones shall be deployed 24 hours to the elections.
The AKISIEC boss assured that the Commission has exhibited a high level of preparedness for the smooth conduct of the Local Government elections as evidenced in the training of ad-hoc staff and retraining of their Electoral Officers and other support staff, adding that they are all set and anxiously awaiting the D-day to demonstrate their competence in the conduct of the elections on Saturday.
Mr. Ikoiwak reminded that voting will begin by 8am and close by 2pm on Saturday, and urged all eligible voters to appear in person at their voting units with their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) on or before 2pm, as failure to comply within the stipulated time will translate to automatic disqualification from voting. He added that anyone who just registered with INEC in the ongoing continuous voter registration is not eligible to vote, as his/her name is not in the 2015 Voter Register produced by INEC for the elections, and therefore would have no business at the polling Unit on Saturday.
Explaining that accreditation and voting shall be done simultaneously, while sorting, counting, collating and announcement of votes cast will follow, Elder Ikoiwak advised eligible voter to go to their voting units perform their civic responsibility without any fear of molestation or hindrance, as security operatives will be on ground to protect persons and materials.
Ikoiwak expressed the Commission’s gratitude to the Almighty God for giving the people of Akwa Ibom State another opportunity to exercise their franchise by electing their grassroots leaders, and urged all to demonstrate a peaceful attitude during and after the exercise, in order to make the election a success.
